Our Purpose

The Public Domain Literature Library is an independent catalogue of ebooks drawn from the public domain. Our aim is to make it easier for readers to discover works that are no longer under copyright, and to provide useful context so that each book can be appreciated on its own terms. We do not host the full texts ourselves; instead we offer curated links to trusted digital repositories where the complete works can be downloaded or read online.

How to Use the Catalogue

Readers can browse the catalogue in several ways. The site organises books into thematic categories such as Exploration Survival Adventure Tales, Fantasy Juvenile Worlds, Technology Airships Imagined Futures, and Historical Social Novels. These groupings are intended to help you find books that share a mood, genre, or historical interest. You may also search by title, author, or keywords. Each entry includes a short description of the work, along with any contextual reading notes we have prepared.

How Books Are Organised

Each book page in the catalogue is tagged with one or more of the categories above. Within a category, books are listed alphabetically by title. Many entries also carry a subtitle that hints at the kind of supplementary material provided. For example, you might see The magic ring, Vol. 1 (of 3) — Background and Themes or The Blue Ghost Mystery: A Rick Brant Science-Adventure Story — Reading Notes. These labels are meant to give you a quick sense of what additional content accompanies the book listing.

Metadata Review

We review bibliographic metadata for every entry — title, author, publication date, and source — to ensure it is as accurate as possible. Where multiple editions exist, we note the edition we have linked to. If errors are discovered, we correct them promptly. However, because the underlying texts come from many sources, we cannot guarantee that every detail is perfect. We encourage readers to consult the original source files for authoritative information.

File Presentation

Where enabled, we provide direct links to ebook files in common formats such as EPUB, PDF, and plain text. The availability of formats may vary from book to book. We also note any special features of a given file, such as illustrations, footnotes, or an index. If a file is particularly large or has unusual formatting, we mention that in the listing.

Contextual Reading Notes

For many titles we have prepared short reading notes — sometimes labelled Background and Themes, Reading Companion, Context and Discussion, or Inside the Classic. These notes are written by our editorial team and are intended to provide historical context, highlight themes, and suggest connections to other works. They are not critical essays, but rather friendly guides to help you get more out of the reading experience. For example, the notes for A Voyage to the Moon may discuss the scientific ideas of its time, while those for Fighting the Flames might explore the depiction of urban firefighting in the nineteenth century.

Correction Handling

If you notice an error in a listing — a wrong title, a misattributed author, a broken link — please let us know by writing to the editor. We review each report carefully and make corrections as needed. We are also grateful for suggestions about additional public-domain works that might fit well within our existing categories.
